- Our Local Corner Pembrokeshire Sir Benfro occupies the far south western corner of Wales. The county is rich in archaeological and historical sites, especially from the period between early prehistory and the late medieval. The southern entry point to the Irish Sea Cultural Province provides ample evidence of communication, exchange and trade between the British mainland and Ireland, ranging from the stylistic similarities of some megalithic monuments, to Celtic crosses, stones and memorials of the Roman, Romano-British and post-Roman eras, some of which carry inscriptions in both Latin and Irish Ogham. During the European Dark Ages the monastic tradition was spread from South West Wales to Ireland and thence to the north of the British mainland. The Norman Conquest of England was followed rapidly by Norman incursions into South Wales and a massive programme of fortifications and sacred buildings; and Pembroke Castle was the starting point for the infamous Norman invasions of Ireland. There was considerable inter-marriage between the new Norman and old Welsh aristocracies. The result was fresh dynasties and dynastic alliances that brought the Welsh princes and marcher lords into frequent conflict with the English monarchy and with each other. The partial subjugation of Wales by Edward I produced little by way of respite, and periodic strife continued down to the time of the Wars of the Roses. Richard III, last monarch of the House of York, was finally defeated by Henry Tudor, who was raised at Pembroke Castle and landed close by on his return from exile, before marching through Wales to the battlefield of Bosworth.
The Tudor period brought a degree of stability to Wales that heralded a comparative prosperity. Through the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries, Pembrokeshire saw the consolidation of landed estates and an emergent landowning gentry, assisted by the proceeds from early industrialisation based on water power West Wales has numerous examples of working mills. During the Napoleonic Wars the strategic value of the Milford Haven Waterway was recognised, leading to the development of naval dockyards at Milford and Pembroke Dock, both with Nelsonian associations. The Waterway continued as an important deepwater haven. A thriving fishing industry was based at Milford; a series of Royal Yachts were built at Pembroke Dock; and Pembroke Dock was an operational flying boat station until the 1950s. From the 19th Century onwards Pembrokeshire has emerged as a popular tourist destination. The quality and variety of its coastline and hinterland is a magnet for visitors, as is the abundant wildlife. But Pembrokeshires historical legacy cromlechs, castles, religious sites and its industrial and military heritage is equally fascinating for travellers from all over the world.
