The Megalithic West

The emergence of monumental architecture, and its coincidence with the Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages, is a fascinating subject. The arrival of Neolithic agriculturalism on the Atlantic fringe is being pushed back as new dating technologies are brought into play — in 2005 analysis of archaeological evidence suggests that mixed farming was already mature on Orkney by 4000 BCe. The Neolithic heralded a transformation in technology and social organisation that was to accelerate a long history of cultural interchange.
