From New Orleans to Harlem In the 1920s sound recording gave jazz the impetus that carried the music and its derivatives into the 1930s and 1940s. The Jazz Age fed the hedonism of a post-war generation. Prohibition added a touch of adrenaline through a sub-culture of speakeasies, bathtub gin, bootleg hooch and organised crime, the milieu that provided the storylines and soundtracks of the great Hollywood gangster movies. And the Great Depression spawned an upsurge in popular, escapist, entertainment, with dance music and cinema in the vanguard. All of these factors coalesced to transform jazz into a commercial commodity: from early days white musicians replicated and popularised the music of black communities; many jazz musicians were to pay lip service and more to public taste; and the jazz form was to evolve into the popular music of its day, reaching its zenith in the war years when swing and big bands were to form part of the morale-boosting armoury of a nation in conflict. But a parallel evolution was taking place. Progressive bandleaders and composers looked to give American music status and credibility through adopting the structures and nomenclature of the European Classical tradition suites and symphonies and operas; the concept album was by no means the invention of 1960s and 1970s pop! At the same time the 1930s big bands were the forcing ground for a new generation of musicians who were to take jazz into new dimensions, away from the dance hall and into the concert hall. Finally, the artists experience of segregation and prejudice (Harlems Cotton Club, for instance, admitted only white customers) planted the seeds of a social consciousness that was to mature and contribute to the civil rights movements of the 1950s and 1960s.
We strongly suggest that you review the information provided on Amazon carefully before selecting your choices. Artists develop and draw upon their own repertoires of standard numbers which appear, in various combinations, albeit with occasionally different treatments, on a succession of albums. It is worth studying the available information to avoid unwanted duplication (although the variations are often interesting in their own right). On the other hand, compilation albums and sets can be of varying degrees of comprehensiveness, a factor that is often reflected in a wide range of prices. Where appropriate, we have tried to give choices that cater to all budgets.
BEWARE of Complete Recordings. This may be a misleading title in some cases and refer to a specific period, a specific record label or a specific line-up. To avoid disappointment, check the Amazon track listing and product details before ordering.
Artists on our Jazz pages are arranged in order of their dates of birth.
