We are currently cataloguing material for our Jazz pages but have put together a sample selection for the time being. Text and detail will be added once cataloguing and listings are complete, but information can be found on the Amazon web site by clicking on the titles.  Where information is available we have given a rough chronological sequence to the featured recordings, generally with collections and compilation albums heading the lists.

We strongly suggest that you review the information provided on Amazon carefully before selecting your choices. Artists develop and draw upon their own repertoires of standard numbers which appear, in various combinations, albeit with occasionally different treatments, on a succession of albums. It is worth studying the available information to avoid unwanted duplication (although the variations are often interesting in their own right). On the other hand, compilation albums and sets can be of varying degrees of comprehensiveness, a factor that is often reflected in a wide range of prices. Where appropriate, we have tried to give choices that cater to all budgets.

Birth of the Blues

Ragtime, in the form of piano rolls, had begun to create an audience for jazz away from live performances; but the greatest step forward came with true sound recording. By the 1920s, Delta and Country Blues, with simple guitar and harmonica accompaniment, were gaining wider audiences. In parallel, a new blues style was appearing, with more sophisticated instrumental backing. The first combos merged blues seamlessly with jazz, relying heavily on the thrusting vocals of almost exclusively black, female, artists and bringing sexual euphemism and innuendo to established themes. The instrumentalists on these early recordings included some of the jazz greats of the future.

Blues-based jazz began a strand of continuity that was to divide and sub-divide over many decades: into the swing and dance bands that emerged in the 1930s; into the popular big bands and crooners of the 1940s and 1950s; and, still in the 1950s, through the white usurpation of black music with the advent of rock-n-roll. Some of the earliest recording artists showed remarkable longevity, living through and beyond the blues revival of the 1960s.

And in the meantime new musicians added their contributions to the blues/jazz legacy, whether holding firmly to the pure tradition or evolving new forms as jazz itself evolved.
