Bookshop Content The
History Unlimited Bookshop has been compiled from the volumes that sit on the
bookshelves of our contributors, from books remembered, books lost but not
forgotten and books lent out and never returned. The result is an eclectic
selection that, nevertheless, covers in lesser or greater detail the span of
the human history of the western world. Our taste tends towards the narrative
style of historical writing that now seems to be returning into fashion and
our listings include many milestones of historiography. We are conscious that
the interpretation of history is continually evolving but make no apology for
including classic titles by some of the best historians of their generation
which may not be regarded as totally current by purists. The principle
criterion for inclusion is, in most cases, literary quality, and here you
will find works by classical authors, by great writers of the 18th and 19th
Centuries, by such recent luminaries as MT Clanchy, AJP Taylor, Asa Briggs,
MH Keen, GM Trevelyan, Roy Porter, and Elie Halevy, and by modern authors of
the stamp of Christopher Hibbert and Antony Beevor.

Bookshop Organisation The Bookshop is divided into a number of categories (see Navigation Bar at top of page) which we hope will make browsing easier. It is, however, important to note that history is not easily compartmentalised and that there is often considerable overlap between periods and geographical categories. Where it has seemed appropriate, pages have been divided into sub-categories that hopefully bring greater clarity to the organisation of featured titles. Each section is prefaced by an editorial gloss that summarises the general thrust of the selection. Inevitably these glosses tend to become longer and more detailed as the site progresses: in the words of AJP Taylor, ‘History gets thicker as it approaches recent times’. The glosses are intended purely as a preamble to our selections, not as a shorthand guide to world history. Titles are listed in what seems to us the most logical order for their particular category. In most cases the titles follow the rough chronological sequence of the events they describe, with works that provide a general introduction heading the list in many cases. Our intention is that, wherever possible, the themes and stories should unfold through the titles and reviews. Where content is self-evident our reviews tend towards brevity; key subjects and events are given the space we feel they deserve.
For the time being our Bookshop is centred mainly on Western Europe and the Middle East. Within Western Europe the British Isles are given considerable weight, firstly because of the likely interests of an English speaking readership, secondly because a British perspective often provides an ‘outsider’ overview of much of European history. And within the British Isles our ‘England’ page offers the greatest number of titles because England, especially after the Norman Conquest, is the nexus that connects the affairs of Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
